Egypt breaks record in exports of fruits, vegetables to Germany

Egypt achieved a record-breaking export of fresh, frozen and dried vegetables and fruits to Germany in 2023, according to EastFruit. German importers bought more than 190 thousand tons of Egyptian produce, which was a 25% increase from the previous year.

Egyptian exports to the German market consisted mainly of five products – potatoes, frozen strawberries, grapes, onions, and oranges. These accounted for about 85% of the total volume. Moreover, each of these products saw a significant growth in exports compared to the previous year.

For example, potato exports from Egypt to Germany rose by 17% to 65 thousand tons, grape exports increased by 50% to 21 thousand tons, and onion and orange exports more than doubled to 16 thousand tons and 10 thousand tons, respectively. Meanwhile, frozen strawberry exports from Egypt remained relatively stable at around 50 thousand tons.

Egypt was one of the top suppliers of vegetables and fruits to Germany, but its ranking varied by product. In the frozen strawberry segment, Egypt dominated the German market with almost two-thirds of the market share. In the potato and onion segments, Egypt was the leading non-EU supplier, but it trailed behind the Netherlands and France for potatoes and the Netherlands and Spain for onions. In the grape and orange segments, Egypt ranked fifth after Spain, South Africa and some other countries.

Other less important products that Egypt exported to Germany included sweet potatoes, dried onions and other vegetables, leeks, frozen vegetables, fresh strawberries, mandarins, garlic, mango, etc.
