Peach prices experience significant downturn – what does the future hold?

Market analysts from EastFruit report a steep decline in the wholesale prices of nectarines and peaches in Turkey this week. It’s worth noting that just last week, a decrease in peach prices was anticipated, yet the actual drop has proven to be unexpectedly severe.

To put things into perspective, on April 17, peaches from Turkey’s film greenhouses were priced at $2.85 USD per kilogram. However, Egyptian exporters have been offering them for nearly half that price, a move that has unexpectedly exerted downward pressure on Turkish peach prices.

In a recent development, Fedir Rybalko, a seasoned expert in the fruit and vegetable trade and logistics, observed that prices in Turkey’s southern provinces have plunged to $1.6 USD per kilogram, aligning with peach and nectarine prices in Egypt.

“Turkish growers are bracing for a bountiful peach harvest this year. Moreover, Azerbaijan and Georgia are poised for record-breaking peach yields, thanks to the expansion of cultivation areas, the maturation of new, high-yield plantations, and favorable climatic conditions. This season, peach prices are also being impacted by the easing of trade restrictions between Iran and the Eurasian Economic Union (EurAsEC), coupled with promising peach harvest projections in Uzbekistan,” explains Fedir Rybalko.

If these initial projections hold true, the upcoming peach harvest season may see supply outstrip demand. This is particularly relevant for all the mentioned countries, barring Iran, as Russia serves as their primary peach export market. Given Russia’s volatile economic climate and its declining population, the demand for peaches there is expected to remain stagnant.
