Aggressive rise in imports from aggressor: Russian cucumbers dominate Polish market

EastFruit reports an unprecedented influx of Russian cucumbers on the Polish wholesale markets. Polish market operators observe that Russian cucumbers dominate the supply, mainly because of their low price.

Poland imports about 2-3 thousand tons of cucumbers from Russia every month, making it the co-leader in cucumber exports to the Polish market along with Spain. Imports of Russian cucumbers to Poland have increased sharply since 2023, when around 8 thousand tons were imported. It is evident that in 2024, the import volumes have surpassed the previous year’s results.

According to EastFruit, Poland is one of the world’s largest importers of fresh cucumbers, ranking sixth after the USA, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, and Pakistan. Poland also has one of the highest growth rates of cucumber imports among the major importers.

It is unclear why Poland keeps importing more vegetables from a country that is considered an aggressor, while Russia has banned Polish products from its market years ago. Meanwhile, Poland has many issues with the deliveries of Ukrainian agricultural products, even though Ukraine grants full access to its market for Polish agricultural and food products.

We previously reported that Poland also imports massive amounts of onions, which helps it maintain low prices on its domestic market.
