Moroccan vegetable exports revenues up by two thirds in five years

Morocco has increased its revenues from vegetable exports by almost two thirds over the past five years, and they have reached $1.4 bln in 2022, as reported by EastFruit. In total, exports of Moroccan fresh, dried, and frozen vegetables generated the revenue of $5.3 bln in the past five years. At this time Moroccan vegetables were available in 80 countries of the world, with France, Spain, the UK, the Netherlands, and Germany making the group of the top five importers.

Tomatoes and bell peppers are the two most exported vegetable categories in Morocco. In addition, the country actively exports fresh herbs, zucchinis, onions, cucumbers, potatoes, and many other vegetables. Over the past five years, Moroccan vegetable exports have been growing almost every year and increased by 64% since 2018.

France is an absolute leader in imports of vegetables from Morocco and ensures about a half of Morocco’s total revenues from vegetable exports. The shares of other countries are less important: Spain (15%), the UK (12%), the Netherlands (8%). Germany ranks fifth and accounts for about 3% of total exports of Moroccan vegetables in 2018-2022 in the value terms.

Tomatoes, with the share of 87%, head the list of the most exported vegetables to France. And this is not surprising, because Morocco was the third biggest exporter of tomatoes in the world in 2022. For France, Morocco is the second most important supplier of vegetables after Spain. In addition, Morocco has been gradually increasing its presence in the French market: in 2022, Morocco’s share reached 15%, and exports to France totaled $600 mln.

As regards exports to Spain, about three quarters of them are represented by two vegetable categories: tomatoes (40%) and bell peppers (36%). For Spain, Morocco is also the second most important supplier of vegetables, with France being the leader.

Spain and France themselves are major exporters of vegetables. However, the two countries still rely on imports from Morocco, which allow them to extend their own export seasons. Thus, the demand for Moroccan vegetables is still rather active, and Moroccan vegetable exports to Spain totaled $177 mln in 2022.

Morocco is the third biggest supplier of vegetables to the UK. Tomatoes are the top exported product, and their shipments have tripled since 2018! Thus, the UK is now the most actively developing market for Moroccan vegetable exports among the leading countries.

EastFruit recently reported that the UK-EU trade had become more complicated after the Brexit. As a result, Moroccan exporters made us of such difficulties and shipped vegetables worth $237 mln to the UK market.

Exports to the Netherlands have also been growing rapidly: they have more than quintupled over the past five years and reached $148 mln in 2022. The Netherlands is also a large global exporter and re-exporter of vegetables, and Morocco focuses mainly on tomato exports to this market.

Germany is the fifth largest country in the geographical structure of Moroccan exports. In 2022, the revenues from vegetable sales to Germany totaled $52 mln in Morocco. In contrast to other countries, more than a half of total export revenues (53%) was generated by bell peppers, while the share of tomatoes amounted to 31%.
