Import surge and price plunge: Ukraine’s potato market dynamics

This week marks the arrival of substantial imports of new harvest potatoes to Ukraine, as noted by EastFruit project analysts. This influx has exerted downward pressure on the prices of domestically grown potatoes. Over the past week, potato prices have dipped by an average of 12%, now ranging between 14-20 UAH/kg ($0.36-$0.51/kg). Concurrently, newly harvested potatoes from Egypt and Azerbaijan are entering the market at 25-30 UAH/kg ($0.64-$0.77/kg).

The Ukrainian market has also experienced a notable surge in the availability of local produce this week. The advent of milder weather conditions has prompted many growers to expedite the sale of the previous year’s potato stock to pivot their attention to the upcoming planting season. Similarly, consumers are actively offloading their potato reserves, which predominantly exhibit subpar quality.

Despite the recent decline in prices, the current cost of potatoes in Ukraine remains significantly higher – averaging 2.5 times the price – compared to the same timeframe last year.
