Greenhouse cucumber is getting cheaper in Ukraine

There is a trend of decreasing prices for greenhouse cucumbers in the Ukrainian market, analysts of the APK-Inform: Vegetables and Fruits project report. The main reason is the start of the supply of cucumbers from the greenhouses in the southern regions and the first batches arrived on the market last week.

Greenhouses are now ready to sell cucumbers with spines at UAH 42-46/kg ($1.50-1.64/kg), which is on average 10% cheaper than at the end of the last week. Prices for smooth greenhouse cucumbers have decreased by an average of 11% since last Friday and are now sold at UAH 37-40/kg ($1.32-1.43/kg).

At the same time, key market players consider that the price of greenhouse cucumbers could have dropped even more significantly, if not for the cold and rainy weather, which somewhat slowed down their harvest in greenhouses.

It is worth noting that imported cucumbers from Belarus are competing well against local cucumbers. Many importers currently have large stocks of Belarusian cucumbers since last week, and they had to reduce prices to 33-35 UAH/kg ($1.18-1.25/kg), which is on average 14% cheaper than a week earlier.

Nevertheless, despite a noticeable decrease in prices for greenhouse cucumbers, today smooth cucumbers in Ukraine cost on average 23% more than in mid-April 2020. At the same time, prices for cucumbers with spines increased by an average of 10% over the year.
