The outdated “Idared” of average quality in Belarus is more expensive than the top varieties apples in Ukraine

At the end of January, the authorities of Belarus forbade raising retail prices for apples above 2.51-2.54 BYN/kg ($0.96-0.97). Even now, the wholesale price of the least popular Idared apples of average quality reaches almost $0.70/kg. More popular apple varieties are sold in bulk at almost the same price at which they should be sold in retail. Thus, there are big doubts that supermarkets will start trading at a loss. This means that apples can simply disappear from the supermarkets and will be sold on the quiet in bazaars.

Wholesalers in Belarus currently pay 3.3 times more for Idared than wholesalers in Ukraine and 4.3 times more than wholesalers in neighboring Poland. Moreover, you have to pay 2-3 times more for “Idared” in Belarus than for elite varieties of premium quality apples in neighboring Ukraine!

But Belarus has voluntarily isolated itself from the supply of apples from Poland and many other countries since January 1, 2022. In addition, quite recently, it also banned the export of apples. However, according to market experts, this will not affect prices in the domestic market in any way, but will lead to losses for all market participants: producers, traders, and supermarkets, and will reduce the country’s budget revenues.
