Georgia demonstrates 14-fold increase of fresh apple exports in the current season!

From early August to the end of December 2020, Georgia exported 8,000 tons of apples, which is 14 times more than a year ago, as reported by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia.

According to the ministry, Georgis supplied 95% of total exports (7,600 tons) to Russia. Export markets for Georgian apples also included Kazakhstan, Armenia, Turkmenistan, Hungary, Singapore, and Hong Kong (China).

In 2020, the volume of apple exports in monetary terms for the specified period amounted to $3.4 million, or 11 times more than in the same period in 2019.

This season’s apple harvest in Georgia has not yet been calculated. According to the forecast of the ministry, it will be around 120,000 tons. In comparison, the apple harvest in 2017 was 20,000 tons, in 2018 – 83,000 tons, and 2019 – 44,000 tons.

It is noteworthy that Georgia has already completed delivering non-standard apples within the state program’s framework to promote the sales of non-standard apples. This season, the farmers handed over to processing enterprises about 50,000 tons of non-standard apples.

The leading supplier of Georgian apples to the market is the Shida Kartli region.

To date, in the agricultural markets of the country, the minimum cost of apples, depending on the variety and quality, is 0.5 lari ($0.15), and the maximum is 3.0 lari ($0.92).
