Reduction in supply makes prices for onions increase in Ukraine

After a short period of stability onion prices in Ukraine began to grow again, EastFruit project analysts inform. The reason for the price increase in the segment was, first of all, a rather limited supply of onions. Most producers that do not have their own storage facilities have already completed the sales this season.

Today, growers offer high-quality onions at 23-27 UAH/kg ($0.63-0.74/kg), which is 15% more expensive on average than a week earlier. According to farmers, they raise prices for onions due to a noticeable increase in demand. At the same time, the supply of high-quality onions on the market is limited since many farms try not to sell from storage.

It is also worth noting that there were a lot of substandard products in the onion segment in the current season. The quality of onions has noticeably decreased due to adverse weather conditions.

The current price of onions in Ukraine is on average 3 times higher than in the same period last year. Market participants still do not rule out that the upward trend in onion prices will continue, and their growth rate will accelerate as stocks in farm storage facilities decrease.
