Organic products in Georgia – high demand, low consumer awareness

Georgian greenhouse has found a very strong demand for bioproducts in Georgia. This means that the company has to delay exporting and focus on the local market. EastFruit reports based on BM.ge (GE).

Greenhouse farm “Bostani” (translated as “Vegetable Garden” from Georgian) will not be able to export for several more years. Beka Barjadze, the founder of the organic farm, talks about the reasons why “Bostani” does not plan to export for 4-5 years.

“Even though we have obtained the bio-certificate and opened the way to the European Union market, we do not plan to export in the next 4-5 years, because now we are only at the stage of serving Georgian customers. We have created our user base. Every month we add a new quantity, we don’t have such a customer who bought our products once and never came back, therefore, the demand in the market is very high and we are thinking about expansion to meet the demand in the market”, explained Beka Barjadza.

The founder of “Bostani” talks about the challenges in terms of sales and says that their main problem is insufficient products.

“The company faced a lot of problems in terms of sales, that’s why we started online sales in December 2022 and are still working on it. We have 1500-2000 users through social networks and 200-300 families are added every month, so we don’t have enough products, this is the main problem today.

In general, the trust in organic products is very low and awareness needs to be raised, however, we are very happy that 99% of our customers have children and they buy products for them. We do not stock any products in advance, the order comes in, it is prepared during the day and it is sent to the customer from 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM. We combine poultry farming, we have eggs and vegetables, mainly products related to child nutrition”, he notes.

For reference: “Bostani” became the first bio-certified greenhouse in Georgia. After 3 years of production, the company was officially awarded a bio-certificate, which means that its products are 100% natural and safe. As for the certifying body, it is CAUCASCERT, which is the only local certification company in Georgia. It is accredited by the German Accreditation Center (DakkS) and is included in the European Commission’s list of equivalent third-country biocertification companies. CAUCASERT LLC issues a biocertificate, which has legal force both in Georgia and in all EU countries.

For 2023, the company will produce 3 tons (GE, BusinessInsider.ge) of bio products.
