Morocco’s mango mania: how mango imports have skyrocketed in recent years

According to EastFruit, Moroccan consumers are increasingly fond of mangoes, and the country is set to break its own record for importing this fruit this year. Morocco’s mango imports have doubled since 2017, and they have already reached almost the same level as the whole of last year in the first nine months of 2023.

Morocco is not among the world’s top mango importers, ranking 23rd globally. However, it has one of the fastest-growing rates of mango imports in the world, second only to China, Jordan and Brunei.

From 2017 to 2022, Morocco’s mango imports increased by an average of 15% annually, while the three countries above saw increases of 30%, 66% and 39%, respectively. In contrast, the US, the Netherlands and Germany, which are the top four mango buyers in the world along with China, increased their imports by only 4%, 6% and 1%, respectively.

Morocco imported 12.6 thousand tons of mangoes in 2022, and 12.4 thousand tons in January-September 2023. These figures may also include some guavas and mangosteens, but most of them are mangoes.

Morocco has the climate to grow its own mangoes, but the production of this fruit is not very common in the country: FAOStat reports that the country harvests between 100 and 400 tons of mangoes annually. Therefore, Morocco relies almost entirely on imports to meet its mango demand, and the trends and patterns of its imports reflect the situation in the main exporting countries.

Most of the mangoes imported to Morocco come from sub-Saharan Africa, but Peru, Brazil and Spain are also important suppliers. Egypt joined the list in 2023, exporting more than 300 tons of mangoes to Morocco in September.

Peru and Brazil supply the Moroccan market from late autumn to early spring, and then African suppliers take over. Mali, the leading supplier, starts its season in March and ends it in July, after which Senegal dominates the market until the end of August. Burkina Faso and Cote d’Ivoire send most of their mangoes to Morocco in March-April. In autumn, Moroccan importers turn to Spain, where the mango season is at its peak.
