Moldova’s walnut plantations emerge unscathed from spring frosts

Despite this spring’s capricious weather, Moldova’s walnut plantations are blossoming on schedule, reports AgroExpert.md.

Oleg Tirsina, Chair of the Moldova Nut Growers Association (ANRM), observes that the bloom of early walnut varieties, notably the esteemed local export ‘Peschansky,’ has been blessed with a spell of agreeable warmth. A recent cold snap, which inflicted minor damage on other flowering fruits, spared these nascent walnut groves. The flowering of mid-season and late varieties has just commenced in the country’s heartland last week, with the northern districts poised to follow suit shortly, thus sidestepping the frost hazard.

Tirsina points out that the season’s primary challenge has been the mismatched blooming of male and female flowers, especially in the widely exported ‘Chandler’ variety. This desynchronization casts uncertainty over the pollination’s effectiveness, the subsequent fruit development, and the eventual harvest. The ‘Chandler,’ an American cultivar, is notably more susceptible to climatic shifts and requires meticulous agricultural practices compared to its European and indigenous counterparts.

Given these conditions and the potential for disease proliferation, it is imperative for nut farmers to prioritize and meticulously execute protective measures.
