Melon prices in Uzbekistan have increased by 50% in the last two weeks

The melon exports season from Uzbekistan is in full swing and the volume of melon exports is many times higher this year than in previous years, at least as of the current date. According to EastFruit analysts, active demand from exporters is one of the main reasons for the sharp rise in melon prices in Uzbekistan over the past two weeks.

According to EastFruit price monitoring, from July 22 to August 5, 2022, the average wholesale prices for melons increased from 1200 to 1800 UZS/kg (from $0.11 to $0.16), i.e. 1.5 times in two weeks. Current wholesale prices are 64% higher than last year’s level recorded on the same date, and 80% higher than wholesale prices on the same date in 2019.

On August 4, 2022, EastFruit wrote about record volumes of melon exports from Uzbekistan this season. Considering that the melon export season started in mid-May, the volume of exports in physical terms over the past 2.5 months since the beginning of the season, in May-July, exceeded the figure for the same period in 2021 by 2 times and set a record for at least the last 5 years.

Moreover, melon exports have grown even faster over the past two weeks. 24 800 tonnes (according to preliminary official statistics) were exported from May 15 to August 4, in more than 2.5 months. And only in the last two weeks – from July 21 to August 4, more than 40% of this volume, i.e. 10 200 tonnes were exported. This indicates an increased demand for melons in the domestic market from exporters.

For comparison, the volume of melon exports from Uzbekistan over the past two weeks (from July 21 to August 4, 2022) was 2.4 times higher than in the same period in 2021 and 3 times higher than in the same period in 2020.
