Uzbek breeders have developed new varieties of nectarine

Scientists-breeders of the Research Institute of Horticulture, Viticulture, and Winemaking under the Ministry of Agriculture of Uzbekistan presented new nectarine varieties “Khosiyat” and “Ifora.” New varieties were bred by employees of the research and experimental station of the research institute, located in Fergana, according to EastFruit experts.

The fruits of new varieties of nectarine are large. The average weight is about 200 grams, according to the Uzbekistan 24 TV channel video.

“New varieties of nectarine have a long shelf life. They can be sold within one month after harvest, provided that the appropriate temperature regime and other storage conditions are observed. These varieties have a beautiful appearance, the flesh is yellow and easily separated from the stone, and the sugar content in them is 14%,” explains Candidate of Agricultural Sciences Adkham Makhmudov, an employee of the Research Institute of Horticulture, Viticulture, and Winemaking named after. Academician M. Mirzaev. Soon, deliveries of seedlings of new varieties of nectarine to farmers for laying new plantations will be arranged, according to the video of the TV channel.

Peach and nectarine are one of the largest export positions of Uzbekistan in the segment of fresh fruits and vegetables, EastFruit analysts say. Last year, peach and nectarine ranked second in the country’s export earnings in the fresh fruit segment, behind only fresh table grapes.

This year, the season for exporting peaches and nectarines from Uzbekistan started in the third decade of May. In the first two months from the beginning of the season, a record volume of these products was delivered to foreign markets. According to preliminary trade statistics, from May 21 to July 20, 2023, Uzbekistan exported 51.1 thousand tons of peaches and nectarines for a total of $41.0 million, which is 27% more in physical terms than in the same period last year and almost two times more than in the same period of 2021.
