The price of potatoes on the Russian market continues to rise, according to analysts at the EastFruit project. Producers note there are very few potatoes left in storage and the rise in prices will continue until the new harvest. At the moment, Russian producers are offering potatoes for sale at 18-27 rubles/kg ($0.24-0.36/kg), which is on average 10% more expensive than a week earlier.
Experts believe the main reason for the increased interest in purchases was the general decline in the supply of potatoes from local farms. The fact is that many producers, who do not have capacities for long-term storage, completed their potato sales during the New Year holidays.
Also, prices are supported by a fairly high demand for high-quality products from wholesale companies, which more and more are declaring that farms do not have the necessary volumes of high-quality potatoes. In turn, farmers associate quality problems with unfavourable weather conditions during the harvesting period like the prolonged rains negatively affected not only the marketable form of the potato but also keeping its quality.

To date, potatoes on the Russian market already cost on average 2.2 times more than at the beginning of February 2020. Key market players associate this price difference with a decrease in the yield of this tuber in the current season in the main regions of production.
