According to analysts from the EastFruit project, the price of onions has started to rise in the Ukrainian market since the beginning of this week.
The primary reason for the increase is the heavy rains observed in the southern regions of the country. These weather conditions force farmers to halt the harvest, which in turn leads to a reduced supply in the market and higher onion prices.
As of today, Ukrainian farmers are declaring onion prices in the range of 10-15 UAH/kg ($0.24-0.36/kg), which is on average 16% higher than at the end of the last business week. Experts attribute this price trend to an increased demand for this product from wholesale companies.

Additionally, the rainy weather has slightly reduced the supply of onions in the southern region, which has also supported prices. Furthermore, not only have the rains halted the onion harvest, but they could also lead to a reduction in the quality of the produce remaining in the fields.
Analysts also report that most high-quality onions are being stored by farmers, who are currently selling only small batches. Meanwhile, according to the daily monitoring data from the project, the average price of onions in Ukraine today is practically at the same level as last year.
