Data from the State Customs Service of Ukraine reveals that between January and August 2024, Ukraine imported 15 thousand tons of potatoes. During the same period, potato exports amounted to a mere 760 tons worth $215 thousand, while imports totaled 15.356 thousand tons worth $9.324 million.

Analysts from EastFruit attribute the commencement of potato imports to an increased demand for food potatoes from local wholesale companies and retail chains, coupled with speculation about a potential shortage of quality potatoes this season. Potato prices are rising sharply due to high demand, further fueled by rumors of a shortage of quality potatoes.
A poor harvest in 2024 has also contributed to the rising prices and increased demand for imported potatoes. EastFruitanalysts highlight that the primary reasons for the surge in potato imports include heightened demand from the military, population migration, and a decline in local production in Ukraine.
