Strawberry harvesting rates have recently accelerated in Ukraine thanks to warm weather, as reported by EastFruit. Thus, the supply of strawberries started growing rapidly, and prices began to fall.
Last week, strawberry prices were not lower than UAH 60-85/kg ($1,64-2,32/kg) in Ukraine. This week, they began to fall in the southern and central regions of the country. In particular, current prices of Ukrainian strawberries vary between UAH 30-65/kg ($0,82-1,78/kg), a fall of 36% week-over-week.
Prices are collapsing due to a rapid rise in the supply of strawberries and rather moderate demand in the Ukrainian market. Growers say of a rather large share of nonstandard berries in the current marketing year due to abundant rainfall.
Current prices of Ukrainian strawberries are also averagely 37% lower year-over-year, and many market players expect them to continue to decline. Their expectations are based on a continuous increase in the supply of strawberries in the Ukrainian market and their often unsatisfactory quality.
