Due to the rapid decrease in the quality of white cabbage in the storage facilities of Ukrainian producers, local farmers began to massively reduce prices for it this week, EastFruit project analysts report. Another factor that affected selling prices in the segment was the decline in demand for cabbage on the Ukrainian market.
It is worth noting that producers that suspended sales of white cabbage before the New Year started sales from storages, and the supply on the market increased significantly. This also contributed to a decrease in selling prices. Thus, the price of white cabbage on the Ukrainian market has fallen to 6-8 UAH/kg ($0.16-0.22/kg) as of January 31, 2023, which is 17% cheaper on average than a week earlier.
At the same time, the price of white cabbage in Ukraine at the end of January 2023 was on average 1.5 times lower than at the end of January last year. According to key market players, a decline in demand for cabbage and a decrease in its prices are normal for this period, and trade in the segment is most likely to become more active only by the end of February. A temporary increase in prices for white cabbage will be possible only if the weather conditions become harsh and average air temperatures drop significantly.
