Potato prices continue to rise in Ukraine

The rise in potato prices continues this week, according to analysts from the EastFruit project. In Ukraine, as in the previous week, this is due to the very limited supply of this product in the market.

Currently, the main sales of potatoes are conducted within the range of 13-18 UAH per kg ($0.32-0.44 per kg), which is on average 20% more expensive than at the end of last week. At the same time, EastFruit experts note that despite the price increase in this segment, the demand for potatoes on the Ukrainian market remains quite high.

The latest price increase for potatoes was due to several reasons. Firstly, it was linked to a reduction in supply from farms, as producers were forced to suspend harvesting activities due to drought in several regions. Additionally, traders reported a limited supply of high-quality products, which also supported prices.

It is worth noting that current potato prices in Ukraine are on average 82% higher than in the first half of August 2023. At that time, shipments of this product were no more than 10 UAH per kg ($0.24 per kg). Moreover, current prices for one of the main staples for Ukrainians are the highest in at least the past five seasons. Furthermore, considering the active sales pace of potatoes, many Ukrainian farmers indicate their intention to attempt another price increase in this segment as early as next week.
