According to the customs service of Moldova, about 11 000 tonnes of vegetables worth almost $4 million were exported from the country last year. The volume of vegetables exported is much bigger than in 2021. The main share of exports was vegetables of the “borscht set”. Namely, onions – about 8 000 tonnes; carrots, table beets, garlic, and spices – about 2 400 tonnes. Around 90% of exports of Moldovan vegetables were delivered to Ukraine.
Earlier, EastFruit reported with reference to managers of enterprises importing inputs for agricultural production, that Moldovan farmers purchased about 30% more onion seeds than last year. According to expert estimates, no more than 2 000-2 500 ha were planted with onions in Moldova in 2022. However, the projected increase in onion crops for the 2023 harvest is unlikely to be excessive. Even if the new onion harvest in Moldova is good, the supply of the new crop of onions to neighboring Ukraine is likely to be intense just like last year.

Another thing is that the 2023 harvest in Moldova will not necessarily be large. Agronomists note that vegetable growers allocate areas with poor soil quality for the spring sowing of onions in the country this year. In addition, a considerable limiting factor in the production of root vegetables this year will be access to water and tariffs for its supply to the fields.
