Prices for peaches and nectarines in Georgia are declining rapdily due to high yield

Although the season of peaches and nectarines in Georgia has just started recently, prices are going down very rapidly, according to EastFruit price monitoring. Farmers from the region of Kakheti (Eastern Georgia) talk about high yield and good quality of fruits in 2023, as the fruits were not damaged by hail, which often happens in this region.

According to the industry experts, 75% of peach and nectarine is grown in Eastern Georgia. In communications with journalists, some farmers emphasize that some varieties of peaches were did not perform well due to abundant rains. However, the price situation suggests that situation is not nearly as dramatic as farmers want to present it –  peach prices are currently the same as in 2021 when production was at its highest in five years.

The farmgate price for nectarines in Georgia is 1.30–1.60 GEL ($0.46–0.65), and for peach, 1.60–1.90 GEL ($0.65–0.75) per kg. At the same time, it should be considered that adding about 0.60 lari (0.25 US dollars) per kg of products will be necessary for sorting, banning, and loading for exports.

Peaches are sold mostly in the capital of Georgia – Tbilisi, and the resort-city of Georgia – Batumi. Exports are also growing rapidly and the majority of the fruit is traditionally going to Russia – Krasnodar, St. Petersburg and Moscow. Some volumes are reportedly also exported to Ukraine, Azerbaijan, and Armenia.
