Blueberry season has started in Ukraine – analysts expect exports to be record high

The Ukrainian company Blue Berry has started the season of picking fresh blueberries on a berry plantation in sunny Transcarpathia, EastFruit reports. Blueberries under the TM BlueBerry Club are already available in Ukrainian supermarket chains. Producer is  GlobalG.A.P. (GRASP) and SEDEX certified.

In 2023 EastFruit analysts expect an increase in fresh blueberry exports from Ukraine as production is expected to increase sharply despite some issues with the weather. Moreover, domestic market remains very small with millions of consumers still staying as refugees in the EU.

In 2022 Ukraine exported more than 2 500 tonnes of fresh blueberries, an increase of 1.5 times compared to 2021. Main markets for blueberries from Ukraine in 2022 were Poland, the Netherlands, the UK and Moldova. In 2023 Ukraine is expected to export more blueberries to the EU countries.

As for the Blue Berry company, one of the first groups to start harvesting of these berries in 2023, it is reporting a rather good yield in the current year. Despite the spring frosts that affected the harvest of many Ukrainian berry producers, the Blue Berry team took measures to counter the spring frosts’ impact on a blueberry plantation in Transcarpathia and managed to obtain a rather good yield.

As Natalya Pukshyn, wartime CEO of the company, previously reported, the team began to engage in the berry business 10 years – back in 2013. They learned from the experience of companies in USA and Poland, and after that the team decided to implement a promising project in Ukraine in the berry sector, working specifically on blueberries. They chose Transcarpathia, where the climatic conditions are most favorable for growing blueberries. In this region, an average of 165 warm sunny days are observed per calendar year.
