Global produce trends: from Egyptian oranges to Uzbek cucumbers – weekly review

EastFruit team offers comprehensive fruit and vegetable market analyses of the previous week for Eastern Europe, Central Asia and Middle East based on the offers and bids at the largest regional EF trade platform with 26,000 participants from 50 world countries (for the extended list of produce trade platforms see this article).

The latest analysis of trade platforms reveals significant trends in the fruit and vegetable markets over the past week. White cabbage remains the top-selling item despite rising prices and decreasing supply. Sales of potatoes and carrots have increased, with red cabbage making its debut among the top positions.

In the fruit segment, apple sales dominate, while pear offer has doubled. Mandarin sales have also surged, and orange prices are falling in Egypt but rising in Ukraine. Uzbekistan continues to see rising cucumber prices.

Active participation in trade is observed from 14 countries, with notable contributions from Ukraine, Iran, Poland, and Greece, while Uzbekistan, Egypt, and Turkey saw reduced offerings. The top five most active countries are Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Iran, Egypt, and Poland. The analysis also covers price changes in Ukraine, Uzbekistan, and Egypt, noting significant fluctuations in vegetable and fruit prices.

Country-Specific Price Changes:

  • Ukraine:
  • Cabbage: Prices are rising due to limited supply, making it the most expensive vegetable in the borscht set.
  • Potatoes: Prices returned to previous levels after a slight increase.
  • Sweet Peppers and Eggplants: Prices decreased.
  • Zucchini and Garlic: Prices increased.
  • Fruits: Pomegranate and persimmon prices fell, while lemon prices rose. Banana and mandarin prices decreased, but orange prices increased.
  • Uzbekistan:
  • Cucumbers: Prices continue to rise.
  • Tomatoes and Pears: Prices increased.
  • Apples: Price range expanded.
  • Egypt:
  • New Potato Crop: Initial price offers announced.
  • White Beans and Oranges: Prices decreased.
  • Export Subsidies: Reduction in subsidies expected to negatively impact citrus exports.

Other Notable Trends:

  • Sales Activity: Increased from Ukraine, Iran, Poland, and Greece; decreased from Uzbekistan, Egypt, and Turkey.
  • New Participants: Offers from the Netherlands, China, and India.
  • Technological Group: Decreased activity, with a focus on selling seedlings, packaging, and agricultural materials.
