Insolight tests Agri Photovoltaic system in an organic raspberry orchard in Switzerland

Swiss agrivoltaic systems developer Insolight installed agrivoltaic system “insolagrin” at bioschmid GmbH in the canton of Lucerne, reports EastFruit referring to Freshplaza.com.

This installation is the part of the larger pilot project which implies testing three different systems and compare results with the control area. As part of a larger pilot project, three different Agri Photovoltaic systems will be installed and tested in comparison to a control area. Following the completion of construction in 2023, the Swiss Federal Research Station Agroscope Conthey (agronomic part) and the Bern University of Applied Sciences (PV part) will conduct a three-year research study. The pilot orchard in Lucerne is supported by various entities, including the Pilot and Demonstration Program of the Swiss Federal Office of Energy, the Canton of Lucerne (Swisslos), the Fondation sur la Croix, other foundations, and participating system suppliers.

This novel system is a major step towards energy transition in Switzerland, as it is has shown that there are immediately scalable, innovative solutions that protect plants in producing agriculture and can produce green energy in the same area. It thus comes at the right time following the positive vote on the Climate and Innovation Act, which was voted on by Swiss citizens on June 18, 2023.

The system installed in raspberry orchard is expected to generate 190 MWh of electricity per year in addition to the raspberry yield.

insolagrin – the agronomic tool to protect crops and generate solar energy at the same time – helps farmers transition to more sustainable and resilient agricultural production. It offers a replacement for plastic tunnels and a choice for consumers to opt for energy-positive fruits.
