Shortage of mandarin and rising prices: weekly produce market analyses for Eastern Europe and Central Asia

EastFruit team offers comprehensive fruit and vegetable market analyses of the previous week for Eastern Europe, Central Asia and Middle East based on the offers and bids at the largest regional EF trade platform with 26,000 participants from 50 world countries (for the extended list of produce trade platforms see this article).

Price Summary and Main Changes

Over the past week, prices have generally increased despite the growing supply of key vegetables such as onions, potatoes, carrots, and cabbage. Notably, the supply of mandarins remains unusually low for this time of year.

Key Price Changes:

  • Ukraine: Prices for potatoes, white cabbage, and carrots continued to rise. Onion prices also increased due to low demand and rising imports. Conversely, cucumber prices fell, and sweet pepper became cheaper. Imported eggplants saw a significant price hike, while broccoli and cauliflower also became more expensive. Garlic prices dropped, but herbs saw a substantial price increase.
  • Uzbekistan: Cucumber prices surged, and the minimum price for potatoes increased. However, apple and pear prices decreased.
  • Egypt: Initial price offers for grapefruit were announced, with other prices remaining stable.

Supply is growing

The number of listings on the EastFruit Trade Platform increased compared to the previous week, primarily due to higher activity from Egypt, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, and Iran. Conversely, activity from Turkey and Poland decreased.

Notable Changes in Supply:

  • Cabbage: The supply of white cabbage continued to grow, making it the top-selling item.
  • Borscht Vegetables: Listings for onions and potatoes increased.
  • Pumpkin: Returned to the top of most frequently offered products, driven by sellers from Ukraine and Uzbekistan.
  • Fruits: Apple and persimmon dominated the fruit segment, with persimmon offers increasing. Exporters from Uzbekistan actively offered pomegranates and table grapes, while Egypt focused on strawberries and oranges. Pears also returned to the top.

Comparison with the Previous Season

Compared to the same period last year, there have been several notable changes:

  • Cabbage and Beetroot: These vegetables saw the highest demand this year, whereas last year, apples were the top sellers, with participants from five countries leading the sales.
  • Mandarins: Last year, mandarin sales were higher, with new supplies from Georgia. This year, despite the season, mandarin sales remain unusually low.
  • Root Vegetables and Potatoes: These were offered less frequently last year and were cheaper.
  • Greens and Tomatoes: Last year, greens were frequently offered by Ukraine and Uzbekistan, while Iran and Turkmenistan led in tomato sales.
