What’s trending? Fruit and vegetable price changes in Ukraine in 2024

According to EastFruit analysts, as of early 2025 prices for most types of vegetables and fruits in the Ukrainian market have risen in comparison to the same period of 2024. However, there were also products for which prices decreased. The average price increase for fruit and vegetable products did not significantly differ from the annual inflation rate, indicating the stabilization of the fruit and vegetable market of Ukraine.

Among the leaders in price growth in 2024 were cabbage, carrots, and apples. Cabbage prices tripled over the year due to reduced production volumes and low product quality. Wholesale prices for carrots increased almost 2.6 times, reaching 26 UAH/kg ($0.61) as of early January 2025. Apples increased in price by an average of 79% and are now sold wholesale at 25-28 UAH/kg, which is also equivalent to approximately 60 US cents. Premium quality apples are sold at significantly higher prices.

“Apple prices have risen sharply in all European countries due to significant crop losses caused by adverse weather conditions. Another reason for the price increase is the high prices for apple concentrate, which support high prices for low-quality apples. Consequently, the fresh apple market has lost the most affordable price segment, allowing prices for medium and high-quality apples to rise,” says Andriy Yarmak, an economist at FAO.

Mandarins are another item that saw a high price increase. We discussed the reasons for the mandarin crises of Europe and Central Asia in this article. In Ukraine, prices for these fruits increased by 58% over the year.

For other key items, the following price increases were noted: sweet peppers and grapes – 20%, potatoes – 30%. At the same time, prices for onions and greenhouse tomatoes did not change over the year, and greenhouse cucumbers decreased in price by an average of 5%. The most significant decrease was noted in wholesale prices for bananas, which fell by 8%.
