Ukrainian farmers raise potato prices again

After a brief period of stability, wholesale potato prices in Ukraine have started to rise again, according to EastFruit. Experts attribute this latest price increase to a general reduction in potato supply from local farms. Many Ukrainian producers, lacking long-term storage facilities, sold off their potatoes in the first half of the current season.

This situation has already impacted prices, which have risen to 20-30 UAH/kg ($0.48-0.71/kg) since the beginning of this week, an average increase of 12% compared to the end of last week. Wholesale companies report a shortage of high-quality potatoes from local farms. Farmers, on the other hand, blame the quality issues on unfavorable weather conditions during the harvest period: prolonged rains negatively affected both the appearance and storability of the potatoes. Additionally, many producers used lower-quality seed material in 2024.

Potato prices in Ukraine are currently about 16% higher than at the end of January last year. Moreover, many market players believe that the rate of price increases will accelerate soon, fueled by concerns about a potential shortage of quality potatoes in the Ukrainian market.
