Ukraine’s greenhouse cucumber prices surge for third straight week

In Ukraine, prices for greenhouse cucumbers are rapidly rising, according to analysts from the EastFruit project. Market operators state that the price increase in this segment is supported by a shortage of these vegetables in the country since the supply from local greenhouses is quite limited. At the same time, the demand for greenhouse vegetables from buyers remains restrained but stable.

Under these circumstances, sellers have the opportunity to continue raising sale prices for the available batches of cucumbers. By the weekend, they are selling this product in the range of 80-100 UAH/kg ($1.94-2.42/kg), which is on average 24% more expensive than at the end of the previous workweek.

It is worth noting once again that the current prices for greenhouse cucumbers in Ukraine are the highest in at least the last seven years of monitoring. Positive price trends in this segment have been sustained in the domestic market for the third consecutive week.

Importers say that many are already preparing to start mass purchasing cucumbers from Turkey, citing a significant reduction in supply from Ukrainian farms. Traditionally, imported cucumbers begin to enter the domestic market starting from the second half of October, when the supply of locally produced vegetables dramatically decreases. The maximum volumes of this product from external markets traditionally reach Ukraine during the first two winter months when domestic production is almost absent.

It’s noteworthy that, as of today, greenhouse cucumbers in Ukraine are already being offered for sale at an average of 29% more expensive than in the same period last year. At the same time, experts do not rule out that greenhouse operators will continue trying to increase prices for their products if the current sales pace is maintained. According to them, the price rise in this segment will only stop once the first large batches begin to arrive in Ukraine from external markets.
