Ukraine doubles frozen vegetable exports – what’s the berry connection?

EastFruit analysts report that in 2024, Ukraine is vigorously boosting its exports of deep-frozen vegetables. Notably, during the first quarter of 2024, Ukraine’s frozen vegetable exports surged to 2,200 tons, more than doubling the figures from the previous year and generating over $2.7 million in export earnings.

Frozen cauliflower, broccoli, and sweet corn emerged as the leading export commodities, with Germany, Israel, Belgium, Italy, Poland, France, and Romania being the primary importers. Notably, Israel predominantly imported frozen sweet corn from Ukraine.

“The surge in exports of frozen vegetables, though surprising to some, is a direct offshoot of Ukraine’s burgeoning berry cultivation,” explains Andriy Yarmak, an economist from the Investment Department of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). “The dramatic rise in raspberry production led investors to fund new freezing facilities. To optimize the use of freezing equipment, storage capabilities, and marketing strategies, producers have diversified their offerings to include a variety of berries, fruits, and vegetables. This strategy has consistently increased frozen vegetable export volumes over the years.”

Yarmak also highlights that Ukraine is in the nascent stages of this industry’s evolution. “It’s important to recognize that Ukraine still imports more frozen vegetables than it exports. Therefore, enhancing product quality and expanding the product range are pressing issues. The primary areas for improvement in Ukraine’s freezing sector include sweet peppers, mixed vegetables, and herbs,” Yarmak concludes.
