Trading with Ukraine to become easier in 2025 with e-Phyto system

According to EastFruit, Ukraine plans to start using the e-Phyto system in the first half of 2025, following approximately three years of efforts to integrate it into national legislation. Currently, the system is undergoing final testing.

The implementation of e-Phyto will streamline the export of fruits, vegetables, and other agricultural products that require phytosanitary certification. It will also simplify the import process, benefiting both consumers and traders.

Countries already using e-Phyto have reported increased trade, reduced costs and corruption, and lower risks of transferring dangerous pests and diseases. Ukraine’s main markets for fresh produce in the EU are active members of the e-Phyto system, which is excellent news for exporters and importers. Other active trading partners using e-Phyto include Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, and India. Additionally, all major banana suppliers to Ukraine can issue e-Phyto certificates. The full list of countries using e-Phyto can be found here.

The e-Phyto system was developed by the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC), part of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. The IPPC aims to modernize and streamline the process of issuing and exchanging phytosanitary certificates, making international trade in plants and plant products more efficient and secure.

What is e-Phyto?

  • e-Phyto stands for “electronic phytosanitary certificate.” It is the digital equivalent of a traditional paper phytosanitary certificate, used to certify that plants or plant products are free from pests and diseases.

Components of the e-Phyto Solution

  1. Central Server (Hub): Facilitates the transfer of electronic phytosanitary certificates between National Plant Protection Organizations (NPPOs). It can connect to national electronic systems or use the Generic ePhyto National System (GeNS).
  2. Generic ePhyto National System (GeNS): A web-based system that allows countries without their own electronic systems to produce, send, and receive ePhytos.
  3. Harmonization: The structure and transmission of ePhytos follow a standardized format, ensuring consistency and reliability.

Benefits of e-Phyto

  • Security: Utilizes digital signatures and encryption to protect sensitive information, preventing fraud and ensuring authenticity.
  • Efficiency: Speeds up the process of issuing and exchanging certificates, making trade faster and cheaper.
  • Traceability: Provides a complete audit trail of all transactions, allowing for the tracking of plant and plant product movements.

How to Join the e-Phyto Solution

Countries interested in joining the e-Phyto Solution can find detailed guides and documentation on the IPPC website. The process involves setting up the necessary infrastructure and ensuring compliance with international standards.
