Too much onion! Farmers of Kazakhstan can’t sell their onions

EastFruit analysts draw attention to the ongoing problems with oversupply of fresh onions in the countries of Central Asia, which we warned about back in June 2023 in the article “Onion bubble”. We recently reported about the same problem with onions in Uzbekistan, where prices now are much lower than during harvest and continue to drop.

Another confirmation of the region’s problems with an excess stocks of onions was received from Kazakhstan. The APK News agency reported that farmers in the Almaty region are experiencing difficulties in selling onions from their storage facilities.

Interestingly, the country’s Ministry of Trade advised farmers to export these onions. But it is with exports that there are problems! In order to intensify exports, onion prices in Kazakhstan will have to decrease quite significantly, because logistic costs from the EU countries or the Middle East are quite high, and in Russia farmers themselves are experiencing the same problems – there are too many onions on the market.

This issue has been reported during a meeting between the Chairman of the Trade Committee Aidar Abildabekov and vegetable growers of the Almaty region. Farmers reported that they were facing difficulties in selling their existing onion stocks.

According to the press service of the Ministry of Trade of Kazakhstan, Afghan businessmen have already expressed interest in purchasing onions in Kazakhstan, having also visited several farms in the Almaty region and familiarized themselves with the storage conditions and volumes of onions. Since the new year, according to the source, active export of onions from Kazakhstan to Afghanistan has already begun.
