The journey of Bukovita apples: from Ukraine to Tajikistan via Uzbekistan?

According to EastFruit, Ukrainian apples are quite popular among consumers in Tajikistan. Fresh apples in branded boxes from Ukrainian orchards are often seen in both wholesale and retail markets. Among the brands frequently spotted in Tajikistan, the Ukrainian brand Bukovita, from the company “Dnistrovsky Sady” in the Chernivtsi region, stands out.

However, there is one nuance that prevents us from asserting with 100% certainty that these are indeed apples from Ukraine. According to official statistics, Ukraine has not exported a single kilogram of apples to Tajikistan in the past five years. Nevertheless, we are 99% sure that these are indeed Ukrainian apples, and here’s why.

Representatives of wholesale trade from Uzbekistan and Tajikistan indicate that these countries actively trade with each other, not only their own products but also imported ones. Most of the imported products enter the Tajikistan markets through the Tashkent wholesale market “Food City.” This includes not only Ukrainian apples but also products from Iran, Moldova, Poland, and other countries.

Since Ukraine is one of the largest suppliers of apples to the Uzbek market according to official statistics, this indirectly confirms the fact of re-export. Trade representatives say that products from Uzbekistan enter Tajikistan in very small batches, which allows them to avoid declaration and taxation.

Interestingly, red apples in black boxes from the Bukovita brand have been popular in Tajikistan for several years, and according to traders, they sell very well. Therefore, the demand for them remains high.

Even representatives of supermarket chains in Tajikistan purchase these apples at wholesale markets. Thus, even if Bukovita has not exported a single box of its apples to Tajikistan, this brand may still be represented in local supermarket chains.

The company “Dnistrovsky Sady” manages 270 hectares of apples, cherries, and apricots in the Chernivtsi region of Ukraine and has its own infrastructure for storage, processing, sorting, and packaging of products.
