Temperature extremes do not pose a great danger to orchards and vineyards of Moldova

Extremely unstable weather is expected in Moldova this week and possibly next week. According to the weather forecast, the temperature will range from +15 degrees in the daytime to -20 Celsius at night. Obviously, high waves of heat and cold pose a risk to walnut orchards as well as most grape varieties. However, in the opinion of specialists of fruit-growing associations, the situation does not seem critical due to the relatively short period of extreme frosts and thaws.  According to the weather forecast from the second half of next week, the country will have a relatively standard temperature regime for this season.

In addition to severe frosts, the icing of trees also poses some danger. Last week in Moldova, there were heavy snowfalls and snow lingered on the branches. However, this week light precipitation is expected mainly in the form of rain so the load on the trees will not be too great. However, frost can damage the buds, especially in vineyards.

In the prevailing weather conditions, experts from the winegrower associations think that the timing and nature of dry pruning plants will have to be adjusted to compensate for the previous two-year moisture deficit in the soil.
