Ukrainian growers have started their sour cherry season last week. However, first large shipments of Ukrainian sour cherries appeared in the market only this week, as reported by EastFruit. The current sour cherry season kicked off in Ukraine several weeks later than last year, but with higher prices.
Currently, sour cherry prices vary between UAH 50-70/kg ($1,37-1,91/kg), an increase of 70% compared with the start of the previous season. Farmers say of rather high demand for their sour cherries and expect a decline in production due to frosts in the first half of spring. Thus, current prices are much higher year-over-year.

Meanwhile, the quality of sour cherries is rather questionable. Due to unfavorable weather conditions, fruits are rather small-sized and have already started cracking and rotting in the trees.
