Red apple varieties in Ukraine, Poland and Moldova developed excellent colour in 2021

According to EastFruit analysts, amid a lot of news about the oversupply of apples in Eastern Europe, the good news is the high quality of the red apple varieties of the 2021 harvest.

Due to favorable climatic conditions and relatively sharp temperature changes, farmers in Poland, Ukraine and Moldova report an excellent colour of the apples. Moreover, apples developed a very good colour even in Poland, where this is usually problematic. Good colour of red apple varieties is one of the main quality parameters and is important when exporting, especially to the markets of the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

This gives hope to Ukraine and Poland for good exports of apples, despite the difficulties with logistics and the growth in the cost of container shipping. For Moldova, this gives a chance to discover new sales markets outside of their only sales market in Russia, where there are ongoing discussions about restricting apple imports from Moldova and those few countries that can still supply apples to the Russian Federation.

According to growers, the taste parameters of apples are also at a fairly high level. In their opinion, tasty apples will help increase domestic sales, although prices in the domestic markets of Ukraine, Poland and Moldova are not at the highest level. In Poland, farmers even tried to protest against the pricing policy of retail chains for apples.

A detailed analysis of the reasons why the global apple business is in a deep crisis, which will be especially tangible in the 2021/22 season, is available in our article #freshapplecrisis.
