Onion prices start to decrease in Ukraine

According to daily monitoring data from the EastFruit project, onion prices in Ukraine have begun to gradually decrease this week. Producers report a noticeable weakening in demand for this product, while supply in the market is gradually increasing due to ongoing harvest activities in the central and western regions of the country.

As of today, farmers are offering onions in wholesale batches at 8-14 UAH/kg ($0.19-0.34/kg), which is on average 11% cheaper than at the end of the previous workweek.

Experts attribute the price decline to an increase in the availability of medium and low-quality products on the market. Adverse weather conditions in Ukraine during the summer months of this year led to a deterioration in the quality of vegetables. Additionally, prolonged rains during the harvest period further affected crop quality, rendering much of the produce unsuitable for long-term storage. In a bid to quickly sell such onions, farmers have frequently reported lowering their sale prices. Meanwhile, high-quality product currently rarely enters the market as farmers prefer to store it, waiting for higher prices.

It should be noted that as of today, the price of onions in Ukraine is still on average 15% higher than during the same period last year.
