Analysts of the EastFruit project noted that prices for onions are falling in Ukraine. Industry experts attribute the negative price trend in the onion segment to the weakening of trading activity in the market. At the same time, the offer at the moment is large. Farmers sell onions of early and medium varieties, which are not suitable for long-term storage.
Thus, at the moment, the main transactions for the sale of onions are concluded within the range of 2.50-4 UAH/kg ($ 0.09-0.14 / kg), which is, on average, 13% cheaper than at the end of the last working week.
The current decline in prices is due to the general surplus of onion supply on the market. At the same time, many farmers are already well aware that part of the onions harvested cannot be stored for a long time due to quality problems, and these products need to be sold as soon as possible. Such a situation is often faced by farms that were forced to plant varietal, not hybrid, onions to save money.
It should be noted that curretly, onions in Ukraine are already on sale, on average 32% cheaper than in the same period last year. At the same time, many manufacturers who have quality products suitable for storage prefer not to sell onions.
