Morocco sharply reduced exports of fruits and vegetables to Russia in 2022

According to EastFruit analysts, the exports of fruits and vegetables from Morocco to the Russian market dropped sharply in 2022.

Moroccan fruit and vegetable exports to Russia in the first 11 months of 2022 declined by 33% compared to 2021, and revenue was at a record low in recent years. As a result, Russia has become 6th among the main markets for Moroccan fruits, after Spain, the Netherlands, France, Great Britain, and Germany. In addition, Canada and the United States are gradually catching up with Russia in terms of imports of Moroccan fruits and vegetables.

The main goods exported to Russia from Morocco are clementines and mandarins, which account for 71% of all export earnings in the fruit segment when delivered to the Russian Federation. Exports of clementines decreased by 11% in a year, and exports of mandarins – by 7%.

On the contrary, the exports of fresh blueberries (the third in terms of supply) from Morocco to Russia have grown. Revenue from the export of Moroccan blueberries to Russia grew by 15% over the year and reached a 12% share in the total export revenue of the fruit and vegetable segment. Similar growth was noted in the exports of fresh strawberries. Meanwhile, exports of fresh raspberries and blackberries decreased by 6% over the year.

The sharpest decline was noted in lemon exports – they fell by 42%. The exports of oranges also decreased by a significant 19%. Export volumes of other positions did not exceed $500 000 in the first 11 months of 2022.

This means that Morocco urgently needs to look for alternative markets for citrus fruits, especially given a decline in the Russian population and a sharp decline in its income.
