Moldova can get a high harvest of table grapes for the second year in a row

According to the observations of specialists from the Association of Grape Producers and Exporters of the Republic of Moldova, by mid-July, the state of most table grape plantations in the country can be assessed as good or very good. If the weather in the second half of summer and during the harvesting campaign is favorable, the 2023 grape harvest in Moldova may significantly exceed 100,000 tons.

Last year, the production of table grapes in the country amounted to almost 120 thousand tons in 2021 – about 85 thousand tons, in 2020 – just over 70 thousand tons. The maximum harvest of table grapes in Moldova was harvested in 2018 – about 126 thousand tons, according to EastFruit. The total area of table grape plantations in the country, according to expert estimates, is 16-17 thousand hectares; however, they are in different conditions.

Experts from the PCRR/USAID Competitiveness and Rural Sustainability in Moldova project believe that in addition to relatively favorable weather conditions in the past two years, young vineyards, especially those planted in Pergola and Gable systems, play an increasingly important role in increasing table grape yields. According to expert estimates, the area of Pergola and Gable orchards is approaching 400 hectares, and the volume of commercial products of their highest quality is 10-12 thousand tons.

The weak side of Moldovan table viticulture is that 85-90% of its marketable products are the “Moldova” variety, which has seeds. Even the best grapes of this variety are rarely sold in bulk for more than $1/kg.
