According to daily monitoring data from the EastFruit project, there is a decline in trading activity in the Ukrainian potato market this week. Contrary to farmers’ hopes that the price of this product would rise again ahead of the New Year holidays, wholesale prices for potatoes in Ukraine have actually begun to decrease. Wholesale companies, in turn, do not see reasons to raise prices and increase purchase volumes for this product since demand has noticeably declined.
As of today, potatoes are sold in the range of 18-28 UAH/kg ($0.43-0.67/kg), depending on the quality, variety, and volumes of offered product batches, which is on average 12% cheaper than at the end of last working week. The slight price reduction in this segment is not only due to weakened demand but also stable supply of these products from external markets. Additionally, most key market players note the mediocre quality characteristics of imported potatoes, which in turn, affects the sales pace of local products as well.

Nevertheless, overall, Ukrainian farmers are not complaining about the wholesale prices for potatoes this season, as the product has become about 41% more expensive compared to the previous year. Experts attribute this significant price difference to a decline in potato yield in Ukraine due to unfavorable weather conditions during the summer months. Many farmers, along with the decrease in yield, also note the gradual worsening of the quality of products stored.
