Greenhouse cucumbers rapidly becoming more expensive in Russia

A noticeable increase in demand for greenhouse cucumbers in Russia as well as a significant reduction in its supply stimulated a rapid rise in prices according to analysts of the EastFruit project. Also this week, the supply of imported cucumbers produced in Iran significantly decreased as many wholesale companies gradually stopped working with imported cucumbers on the eve of the start of the sales season for local greenhouses.

At the moment, local greenhouses offer cucumbers at 130-160 rubles/kg ($1.77-2.18/kg), which is on average 31% more expensive than at the end of the last working week.

According to producers, the main reason for the sharp rise in prices is the fact that the supply of greenhouse cucumbers on the Russian market has decreased to a minimum. Most greenhouses plan to launch a new turnover of cucumbers not earlier than the beginning of February. At the same time, the demand for these products remains consistently high, which is the main driver of price growth.

It should be added that greenhouse cucumbers in Russia today are on average 13% more expensive than in the same period last year. Market operators note that the supply of these products in local mills is very small and supplies from the external market are unstable. Therefore, they do not exclude that prices in this segment may rise again next week.
