Georgia more than doubled imports of sweet potatoes

EastFruit analysts note that sweet potatoes are becoming popular in Georgia. Monthly imports were a record almost every month in 2022. The total volume of sweet potato imports may seem small, but there is a clear upward trend.

In 2021, Georgia imported 54 tonnes of sweet potatoes, and imports only in the first half of this year are 41 tonnes. This volume is 2.4 times higher than imports in the same period in 2021.

True, overall demand in Georgia was weak in 2021 due to pandemic concerns, but sweet potato imports have been on an annualized increase for some time now, and this growth has not stopped even in 2021.

Since 2014, Georgia has been buying more and more sweet potatoes from abroad every year. Annual imports of sweet potatoes have grown by an average of 6 tonnes over the past 8 years. Almost all sweet potatoes were bought in the Netherlands all these years. If the dynamics of imports is maintained in the second half of 2022, imports will exceed 100 tonnes.
