The introduction of modern technologies and innovations in agriculture is one of the priorities for the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, and active steps are already being taken in this direction, – First Deputy Minister George Khanishvili said at the International conference “HortiTech: trends and opportunities for Georgia“.
According to George Khanishvili, it has been several months since the purchase of agricultural drones and weather stations for agriculture in Georgia became possible with the support of the state project “Preferential Agro Credit”, which increased their availability for farmers. For several years, the Ministry has been financing the introduction of solar panels and related technologies under various programs. For the development of these areas, active work and the allocation of more resources are desirable, and the country’s authorities are working on this, he noted.
“We believe that the introduction of modern technologies and innovations is the right way, which can accelerate the development in the country of a less developed agriculture and bring the indicators closer to the European level. Moreover, today finding good quality labor is an issue. In addition to reducing the cost of production and improving its quality, technology can to a certain extent replace workers. Now 19-20% of the population of the country is employed in agriculture, this is a rather high figure. In the future, when we have a more intensive economy, fewer people should be employed, but much more products should be produced. This is the future of Georgian agriculture,” George Khanishvili said.
He thanked the organizers of the conference, noting that the event will help identify problems in the introduction of modern technologies and find ways to solve them.
The conference “HortiTechn: Trends and opportunities for Georgia” is organized by the EastFruit project with the support of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
