Peach and nectarine market: price outlook and present situation in Uzbekistan, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Turkey

According to Fedor Rybalko, international consultant of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and EastFruit expert, relatively low peach and nectarine yields are expected in Uzbekistan in 2023, but farmers are expecting larger sizes of fruits. Accordingly, many fruit traders and growers in Uzbekistan are expecting higher prices for peaches and nectarines.

Interestingly, at the moment, wholesale prices for peaches in the Uzbek market are much higher than in Tajikistan – $2.2 per kg versus $0.7 per kg, respectively.

However, this situation is typical for Uzbekistan, where prices usually reach “normal” levels in the first ten days of July and remain low until mid-September, EastFruit analysts explain. During the low-price period exports of these fruits are naturally the most active.

Unlike Uzbekistan, in Georgia and Azerbaijan, farmers expect higher yields of peaches and nectarines. However, they will start harvesting these fruits from June 25th only.

In Turkey, in the southern regions, where peaches and nectarines are now harvested for exports, a strong hailstorm has recently created a significant damage to growers, which lead to a shortage in the supply of high-quality products. This led to an increase in the wholesale prices of peaches and nectarines. However, harvesting of these stone fruits in other regions of Turkey will begin only in two weeks.

Lower peach and nectarine yields are also expected in Spain. This, according to Fedor Rybalko, will support export prices for peaches coming from Turkey in the near-future.
