Frozen market of fruits and berries – prices in the EU continue to rise

Following the revival of activities on the market of frozen raspberries and consequent price rise, EastFruit team continues monitoring the situation carefully. Here is the latest update on the market development for key frozen fruits and berries in the EU.

Strawberries

The market for frozen strawberries continues to be dominated by products imported from Egypt. Participants ask about European strawberries, hinting at a willingness to pay more. However, there is no specific price premium to discuss, and Egyptian berries continue to be sold very inexpensively. Moreover, the recent sharp devaluation of the Egyptian currency leaves no chance for price increases in this category, EastFruit analysts say.

China is also trying to offer its frozen raspberries, but they are too expensive, especially considering the logistics hardships – FOB China from $1.1 to $1.3 per kg. Lower quality categories sell for up to US $0.8.

Raspberries

The frozen raspberry market continues its steady upward movement. Today, if quality products are available on stock, one can sell them in the EU for 2.50-2.70 euros per kg. But raspberries of lower quality are also in a good demand although at lower prices.

China is actively offering frozen raspberries for exports at prices that are already higher than prices in Europe. This indicates increased demand for raspberries in Asia, which creates the preconditions for further price increases in Europe in the future. We released our forecast for raspberry prices for Ukraine and Europe as a whole for the season 2024/25 two weeks ago.

Pitted plums

Machine-cut frozen plums are not very popular in Europe. However, Serbia offers such product for 0.80-0.85 euros per kg on the EU market. The “manual half” or manually cut haves of the frozen plums is in better demand and prices are set at a level of more than 1.15 euros in EU countries.

Apricots

There are not many frozen apricots of European origin the market. Chinese product dominates, but these are shipped after the order and the logistics now take longer than usual. There is also talk about imports of frozen apricots from Turkey at a reasonable price. The price of frozen apricots in China ranges from 80 US cents per kg to US $1.1 dollars per kg.

 Sour cherries and sweet cherries

Everyone needs frozen pitted sour cherries – demand clearly exceeds supply. It is noticeable that there is a very sharp deficit of products in this category on the market. It’s difficult to name prices now, since there are very few actual sales.

 Blackberries

There is a shortage of high quality frozen blackberries on the market. China offers its products at prices of more than $2.0 per kg, excluding delivery. There are products in Serbia, but there is information on the market about serious quality issues this year and a high percentage of returns. Thus, prices for high quality frozen blackberries are on rise.
