Moldova: plums production to be lower and exports higher than earlier expectations

Before the end of the season, organizations of agricultural producers in the Republic of Moldova slightly adjusted the estimated data on the plum harvest this year. In October, operational estimations of fruit growers associations based on the results of the harvesting campaign showed that plum production in the country exceeded 70,000 tons. By the end of November, experts from these organizations agreed that, most likely, the harvest was slightly lower, about 60,000-65,000 tons. According to statistics, in 2019, plum production amounted to just under 109,000 tons.

The decline in the final forecast for plum production in 2020 is a reaction to numerous testimonies from horticultural farmers that at least three-quarters of the harvest of these fruits were “small, dry and light”.

Nevertheless, as of mid-November, Moldova exported more than 50,000 tons of plums from this year’s harvest, which is several thousand tons higher than the forecast for external supplies of these products. The final information on this matter will not change much, as less than 1,000 tons of plums are stored in the warehouses of agricultural enterprises and traders.
