Snow has been falling in most regions of Moldova for 2-3 straight days so far and, according to weather forecasts, it will continue to fall at least until the beginning of next week. Fruit and vegetable market operators hope that the snow and its related transport logistical problems will support the trend of gradual growth in prices for basic local vegetables such as onions, carrots, and potatoes, which began in the second half of January.
EastFruit reported that imported vegetables in Moldova increased slightly starting at the beginning of the last ten days of January. As a result, the maximum wholesale price for potatoes increased to 4.5 lei/kg ($0.27/kg), carrots to 4 lei/kg ($0.24/kg), and onions up to 3.5 lei/kg ($0.21/kg). Most of the high-quality products imported from the European Union (mainly Romania) by supermarket chain suppliers have risen in price.

The majority of Moldovan retailers are mobile, that is, they do not have large warehouses even in Chisinau and other cities. Therefore, even temporary and short-term disruptions in the supply of imported products quickly affect the supply of chain stores. The heavy snowfall also slows down the delivery and distribution of perishable goods within the country.
Taking this into account, local vegetable farms, especially large ones with their own transport, hope the weather issues reorient retailers to purchase locally produced vegetables.
