Russian farmers have raised prices for potatoes

This week, prices for potatoes have once again increased on the Russian market. The main reason for the increased demand, according to the experts, was the general reduction in the supply of potatoes in local farms. The fact is that many producers who do not have capacities for long-term storage have completed their potato sales during the New Year holidays.

First of all, wholesale companies complain about the lack of high-quality potatoes supplied from the farms. In turn, farmers associate quality problems with unfavourable weather conditions during the harvesting period: prolonged rains negatively affected the marketable form of potatoes and their keeping quality.

According to the EastFruit price monitoring, in the main production regions of the Russian Federation, the price of potatoes already varies within the range of 17-25 rubles/kg ($0.23-0.34/kg), depending on the quality. Thus, only since the beginning of this year, these products have risen in price by an average of 10%. As a result, at the moment, potatoes on the Russian market are already 2.3 times more expensive than in the same period last year. Simultaneously, the majority of large market players are confident in further price increases in this segment.
