Morocco targets 90,000 tons of avocados for 2024/25 with exports set to dominate

Morocco has seen a notable increase in its avocado farming and exports, with data showing that from October to December 31, 2024, the country exported 42,000 tons of avocados. According FreshPlaza, the forecast for the 2024/2025 harvest is around 90,000 tons, with expectations to export between 80,000 to 90,000 tons, leaving approximately 10% for the domestic market.

With an eye on enhancing export volumes, Moroccan exporters are setting their sights on April to hit their export targets amidst stiff competition from other leading avocado exporting countries.

Abdellah Yamlahi, president of the Moroccan Avocado Association, highlighted the sector’s growth and the role of Moroccan exporters in reaching European markets. He remarked on the positive export trajectory but also pointed out the current decrease in avocados’ reference price in Europe, signaling a dip in consumer demand. Yamlahi also noted an uptick in farmgate prices to between MAD 19 and MAD 20 per kilogram and stressed the importance of the upcoming months for boosting exports.

Yamlahi urged Moroccan farmers to hasten their avocado harvest due to the mix of cold nights and warm days, to outpace competitors like Spain, Colombia, and Israel. Last season, Morocco exported 60,000 tons out of a 70,000-ton production, with the domestic market consuming the remainder. The expansion of avocado farming in Morocco continues, particularly in areas like Tiflet, Moulay Bousselham, and around Larache, as the country aims to solidify its position in the global avocado market amidst competitive challenges.
